Climate Tricks 8: Catastrophic Scare for Climate Money

Here is another proof that the catastrophic anthropogenic global warming (CAGW) is mainly about money-money.

A bill in Philippine Congress, called the "People's Survival Fund" (PSF) bill, authored by Cong. Erin Tanada et al in the lower House, and Sen. Loren Legarda and other Senators in the upper Chamber, wants to distribute millions, or billions of pesos of tax money to local governments and possibly environmental NGOs to improve climate change adaptation and mitigation. This is on top of existing "fight climate change" laws and programs. The bill will also create a new bureaucracy, the PSF Board, under a new bureaucracy, the Climate Change Commission (CCC).

And why so? This news was written and published in December 2007, suggesting that by end of summer this year, ie, around 3rd week of September 2012 or just four months from now, the Arctic will be ice-free. Scary.

This prognosis is similar to another prediction made in January 2007 saying that up to 4.5 billion people could this this year due to "global warming-related causes" -- so guys, take cover! See, Climate Tricks 1: 4.5 Billion People to Die This Year, January 03, 2012.

Meanwhile, here are more recent stories from more realistic, non-alarmist climate change analysis.

Putting Ice In Perspective

NSIDC normally stretches the Y-scale of their Arctic plots relative to their Antarctic plots, which makes it look like the negative anomaly is very large. Below I put both together at the same scale.
It turns out that the polar ice caps are doing just fine, and the Arctic Penguins and Wildebeest are in no immediate danger of drowning.

Yet Another Paper Shows “The Enormous Importance Of Solar Activity Fluctuations On Climate”

Yet another study has appeared in the Journal of Geophysical Research, this one looks at the precipitation history on the Tibet Plateau of the last 1000 years.
Figure 1: Reconstruction of precipitation amounts for the edge of the Tibet Plateau. The bars on the chart depict prominent weak phases of solar activity, which correspond to Om = Oort Minimum; Wm = Wolf Minimum; Sm = Spörer Minimum; Mm = Maunder Minimum; Dm = Dalton Minimum). New paper confirms Little Ice Age was a global phenomenon, related to solar activity

A paper published today in Geophysical Research Letters confirms that "the Little Ice Age was a global event, probably caused by a change in solar [activity] and volcanic forcing [activity]." The paper finds that Greenland and Antarctica cooled synchronously, although to different magnitudes, suggesting to the authors that climate feedbacks operate differently in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. The Little Ice Age was associated with the Maunder Minimum, a lull in solar activity that may be similar to the present. This paper corroborates other recent research showing that the Little Ice Age was a global, not local, phenomenon. According to the paper, the temperature from 1400-1800 AD in Antarctica was on average ~ 0.52C colder and Greenland ~ 1C colder than than the last 100 year average. This would imply that the 0.7C global warming since 1850 simply represents a recovery from the Little Ice Age.

Key Points
  • Cold interval from 1300 to 1800 C.E. at WAIS Divide
  • The 1400-1800 C.E. was 0.52+/-0.28 deg C colder than the last 100 years
  • Cooling broadly synchronous to Greenland cooling, with lesser amplitude

Green line is CO2 level, now around 395 parts per million (ppm); red line is the linear best fit from January 2002 to April 2012, global lower tropospheric temperature, UAH and RSS data average. It shows a decline of 0.05 C per decade.

Yeah, more CO2 leads to more warming. Dream on. But for the warming leaders and campaigners, who cares if the projected temperature rise does not occur? More drought and more rain, less snow and more snow, less storm and more storm, they are all evidence of CAGW, so we ordinary mortals should keep sending them money, via donation or taxation, via deception or coercion, via present borrowing and future taxation.
